New Mandatory Field - Data exists?

I’m trying to add a new required field to a table but I keep getting:

You’ve indicated that this is a mandatory field. This table already has data, so you must specify the initial value for this field.

But the table is empty. What am I missing?

To make it short: possibly there are some soft deleted records left in your table.
